Joe Miller, a painter from Chicago, Illinois, has a unique approach to art and life. He believes in moving forward without overthinking mistakes. This philosophy was evident when he taught drawing classes to kids. He intentionally gave them pencils without erasers to encourage them to focus on progress rather than perfection.
Just moving forward is more important than worrying about correcting things
Joe explains. This mindset has shaped his artistic journey, making him a passionate and versatile artist.
Joe’s love for art began at the Boulevard Art Center, where his parents took him every Saturday morning. It was there that he became obsessed with learning the tools of drawing — people, still life, and new techniques. He couldn’t wait to practice what he learned throughout the week and return to the art center for more inspiration.
The art class was the best babysitter
Joe jokes, recalling how he would spend hours absorbed in drawing and practicing.
Today, Joe’s motivation comes from the joy of making a living through his art. He stays humble and grateful for the opportunity to create every day. His work often catches the attention of passersby, especially kids.
There’s a school that walks by my studio, and I’ve seen groups of kids talking about my work, saying, ‘Oh, this is so cute!’ It’s too much,
he laughs.
Joe’s artistic style is hard to pin down, but lately, it’s been dominated by a colorful dot explosion that people love. However, he enjoys experimenting with different forms and projects, keeping his work fresh and exciting.
I like to treat every project as a blank slate
he says. This approach allows him to explore new ideas while staying true to his unique style.
From emotionally driven projects like working with Charles Bradley and Daptone Records to personal pieces featuring his family, Joe’s work is deeply meaningful. His advice to aspiring artists?
Focus on the path ahead. Don’t worry about mistakes or being a perfectionist. The journey is often more exciting than the perfect end result
Joe’s story is a testament to the power of passion, persistence, and embracing imperfection. Whether he’s painting a vibrant mural or teaching kids to draw, Joe Miller continues to inspire with his creativity and infectious enthusiasm.
